autumn tour of Kolyma around Lake Jack London is our second route to this unique corner of Russia. The first thing we do is to climb Mount Aborigine. This tour is also more aimed at contemplating autumn colors
and incredible panoramas. TheMagadan Region is not famous throughout the country for its nature. And the landscapes of Kolyma autumn, especially the vicinity of Lake Jack London, are all the more surprising and delightful. Autumn in Kolyma is the same brand as winter on Lake Baikal. Such incredible colors of all shades from bright green to red and orange are few places to be found. And when the first snow covers the Chersky Ridge, nature is reborn: snow-capped peaks and sharp mountain massifs stand out in contrast against the background of yellow larch and red
tundra. The journey takes you to such places that sometimes you feel like a true pioneer! And the titles here seem to have fallen off the pages of the famous writer's stories — Challenger and Aboriginal Peaks, Invisible Lakes, Dream Lakes, Gray Gull, Dancing Grayling, Unknown Creek, etc.
We spend the night in tents, fish a lot, cook on a campfire, and enjoy the brightest sunrises and sunsets.
Please note that we are going in early September to see the rich colors of autumn on the lake. This is not the most comfortable time, but it is definitely one of the most beautiful. It will be damp, cold
and difficult.main goal of our trip is to see the famous Kolyma and one of the most beautiful lakes in Russia. Why in autumn? At this time, you will see the Magadan Region in all its splendor. This is a very promising region, but underdeveloped in terms of tourism. But in vain. The beauty it offers to tourists will easily “impose competition” on foreign natural attractions.
Really amazing grayling fishing, diving into the history and legends of Kolyma await you. We will spend the night in tents, choosing the most picturesque views (what kind of scenery will parking on the Purga give us!). It's not an easy adventure, but a trip to Jack London's Lake is definitely worth adding to your travels.
Where did this name come from? The main legend is that the name appeared thanks to a book found on the lake shore by the famous writer Jack London. Coincidentally, these places seemed to have appeared from the pages of his stories. Here, travel participants feel like true pioneers and adventurers.
We recommend that participants arrive in Magadan the day before the start to adapt to the new time zone, take a break from the road and see the city's sights. You can stay in Magadan itself, or in a hotel in the village of Sokol, where
the airport itself is located. At 12 noon we will meet at the airport in Magadan. We load into the car and drive along the Kolyma highway. We have a long way to go — almost 500 kilometers along the legendary road. We will definitely stop at beautiful and iconic places, as well as have a snack at a roadside cafe.
We will spend the night on the bank of the Debin River before reaching the village of Yagodnoye. Tents, a fire, discussion of plans for the next day, distribution of provisions and group equipment
.In the morning, Ural's shift worker comes to pick us up. This is one of the few ways to get to Jack London Lake, as we have to cross the Debin River by water. Then there are 56 kilometers along an old dirt road with a smooth climb
to the mountains. On the way, we will stop at picturesque places.
Our goal for today is to get to the camp near Lake Jack London. We will stop not on the shore of the reservoir, but much higher. It offers fantastic panoramas of the lakes and the Bolshoy Angachak mountain range. We also have a little glimpse of our further route.
We set up a camp and admire the scenery. If time permits, you can take a walk around the area.
Lovers of luscious sunrises should wake up early — the views of the Bolshoy Angachak Mountain Range are worth it.
We wake up, have breakfast and get ready for the active part of our journey. And we'll start it with a visit to the picturesque Anemone, Gray Gull and Skazka Lakes. A real mountain lake necklace.
We'll do it lightly without backpacks. But the absence of any trails makes our task a little more difficult.
You can spend your free time fishing, contemplating the scenery and relaxing.
Morning, breakfast, training.
We begin the active part of our journey and get under our backpacks. After just 1 kilometer, we say goodbye to the good road and just walk in a direction without a trail. It'll be here soon when we get to Jack London's Lake shore.
Then we continue along the lake to the Purga River, stopping for lunch along the way.
The Purga River will greet us with a protracted ford through cold waters.
We set up the camp on a picturesque spit on the lake shore. The abundance of larch trees makes this site very picturesque, and the berries are delicious.
We will have a difficult transition across the Studeny Pass to the valley of the Unknown stream — this is one of the most beautiful valleys of the Bolshoy Angachak Range.
But this is also one of the most difficult days of the route, because we have to cover a long distance in the absence of trails — through kurumnik, dwarf cedar and soft moss. There will also be a small ford across the Unknown Creek
We camp on a lake with the poetic name Invisible.
Photographers and lovers of beautiful sunrises — we strongly recommend getting up early
After a hearty breakfast, we leave our camp and head upstream. Our goal is to get closer to one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in Russia (according to any of our groups) — Pila. There will be moss thickets, disappearing trails, kurumnik
and wetlands.Back to camp, dinner.
It's time to move on, but first, breakfast and camp fees.
The morning will start with a pleasant one — a ford through icy streams and wetlands. Then, without a hint of a trail, we (almost) reach the middle lake and go down to
Jack.
We call a boat over the radio and fly to the opposite shore to the Spit of Biologists. This is the local Mayami Beach — yellow sand, crystal clear water. There is also a sauna and a stunning view of the lake and the Kolyma Mountains.
We devote the first half of the day to a small hike to a neighboring mountain, from where breathtaking panoramas of the Cherskoye Range and the necklaces of blue lakes await us
We will spend the afternoon in a hot bath, swimming in a cold lake, a fire and a delicious dinner.
The final crossing on foot — we go to the place of the first night's stay.
Narrow trails wag between trees and moss, periodically leading us to small cozy lakes.
For lunch, we'll stop on the shores of Dancing Grayling Lake. The name came about due to the peculiarity of the fish: at dawn and sunset, grayling hunts for flies and often jumps out of the water, creating splashes here and there.
We cross the lake along the Variants Channel, a channel between 2 lakes where you can jump across the rocks to the other side.
Check out early in the morning. After the familiar off-road road on shift, we return to the Debin River to the Kolyma Highway
.We're setting up a camp.
We have breakfast and board the bus that will take us to Magadan. We arrive late in the evening and check into the hostel
.You can extend your trip by visiting other attractions in the Magadan Region, or you can fly away. The hotel or apartment will be at our disposal until 12:00 local time.
Please note that we always do our best to follow the established route. However, routes can sometimes be changed depending on various circumstances, including but not limited to: extreme weather conditions, political or bureaucratic obstacles, earthquakes, fires, floods, and more.
You need the right attitude to participate - this is a trip to a rather difficult region where tourism is just beginning to develop. There will be no infrastructure here. The nights are cold. Lots of wetlands. There are no trails at all (most often it will seem to you that the guide is leading you straight away
)
